The Bawu is an easy to play traditional Chinese flute. The tone reminds us of the western Clarinet. This Bawu flute is made out of high quality bamboo. The End-blown version of this flute is held vertically, like a recorder.
    How to play the Bawu?
Blow at the end of the flute, it is fairly simple.
Try not to blow too soft or too loud, find the right intensity.
Hold it in front of you, like a recorder
Also suited for people with small hands
    The musical possibilities
Play in various Chinese and Western keys and scales
'Slide' notes by sliding your finger slowly off a hole. (This works really well on a Hulusi!)
'Trills' by moving your finger up and down above a fingerhole quickly.
There is demonstration video on online to see it in action and how its played.
    Background
Although shaped like a flute, it is actually a free reed instrument, with a single metal reed. It is played in a transverse (horizontal) manner. It has a pure, clarinet-like timbre and its playing technique incorporates the use of much ornamentation, particularly bending tones. Although the bawu likely originated in the Yunnan province of southwest China, it has become a standard instrument throughout China, used in modern Chinese compositions for traditional instrument ensembles. It is typically used as a solo instrument, and is often featured in film scores; it is sometimes also heard in popular music recordings. Although the bawu is still predominantly performed in China and Vietnam, it has in recent years been adopted by many composers and performer around world.
